Introducing VB Notes

VB Notes is a notes app built around two ideas.

Your notes are files. Every note is a markdown file in a folder you pick: on your phone, or in iCloud Drive. There is no database to export from and no format to convert out of. Any other app can open the files, and anything that writes a markdown file into the folder shows up as a note. More and more of the notes in my own folder are written by scripts and AI agents, and they read just as well as the ones I type.

You can find a note by what it means. Searching for “what does my flatmate owe me” finds a note called “Rent split with Arjun”, though the two share no words. The model that does this runs on the phone itself, so neither your notes nor your questions go anywhere.

What it does today

  • A clean editor that writes plain markdown: headings, lists, checklists, tables, code coloured by language, Mermaid diagrams, photos and voice notes.
  • Tags written right in the text, nested like #work/clients, each with its own colour and an icon if you want one.
  • Pins, Archive and Trash, kept as ordinary folders.
  • Ink and Paper themes, plus many more, and your choice of fonts and spacing.
  • A desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux that opens the same folder, with the same search by meaning and a ⌘O window to find or start any note.

Where to get it

The desktop app is on the download page now. The iPhone and Android apps are coming soon to the App Store and Google Play.

VB Notes is free, has no account to sign up for, and shows no ads. If something doesn’t work the way you expect, open an issue on GitHub.
