Privacy

VB Notes collects no personal data. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. VB Notes has no server of its own that your notes could be sent to. The optional chat with AI sends what you ask about to the AI provider you choose; see below.

Your notes

Your notes, photos and voice notes are files in the folder you choose: on your device, or in your own iCloud Drive if you pick a folder there. When you use iCloud Drive, Apple stores and syncs those files under its own terms. VB Notes reads and writes only the folder you chose.

The app keeps a few files of its own on your device: your settings, and indexes of your notes that make the list and search fast. They never leave the device.

Search by meaning

Search by meaning runs on your device. Neither your notes nor your questions are sent anywhere to be searched.

Chat with AI (optional)

VB Notes can chat with an AI about your notes. It is off until you turn it on in Settings, and then uses your own account with the provider you pick (such as OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic or Google), or, on the desktop, a model on your own computer through Ollama.

When you ask a question, VB Notes sends it to that provider together with the note you are asking about, or, when you ask about all notes, the notes that match your question. Nothing is sent until you ask. The provider handles what it receives under its own terms and privacy policy; VB Notes never sees it.

Your API key stays on your device: in the app's own settings on a computer, and in the Keychain or the Android keystore on a phone. It is never written to your notes folder.

What VB Notes downloads

A few things are fetched from the internet. Like any download, each request shows the server your IP address; none of them includes your notes.

• The search model, once, from Hugging Face (huggingface.co).
• The code that draws diagrams, on the phone, when a note has a Mermaid diagram, from jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net). The desktop app carries its own.
• App updates on the phone, from Expo's update service (expo.dev). The request carries the app's version and your device's platform.

Permissions

The phone app asks for the camera, your photos and the microphone only when you add a photo or a voice note to a note. What you add is saved in your notes folder.

This website

vbnotes.com sets no cookies. It counts visits with Umami, which runs on our own server, not a third party's: the page, the site you came from, your browser, operating system, device type, country and city, and clicks on the download, App Store and GitHub links. Umami does not store your IP address or anything that identifies you, and it counts nothing when your browser asks sites not to track you. The web server also keeps standard access logs (IP address, page and time) for about two weeks, for security, and then deletes them.

Children

VB Notes collects no data from anyone, children included.
